FREE Native Plant Installation on publicly accessible land by Refuse Refuse.

Do you have an empty tree well, unmaintained lawn area, residential median, or bordered edge of a park that you’d like to see transformed into a thriving green space?

Pocket Gardens provides all necessary materials (plants, tools, mulch, etc.) to maintain these plots, as well as access to our amazing community of volunteers. All we ask for is a one year commitment to help care for the land through occasional watering, trash pick-up and weeding.

Interested in becoming a steward of your own Pocket Garden? Email sethianthomas@gmail.com to get started.

Adopt a Pocket

To Adopt a Pocket in your neighborhood, please make sure the space meets the following criteria…

  •  Neglected spaces that have accumulated weeds or trash over time. These could include tree wells, street medians, empty pots, or strips of unused land.
  • Within walking distance of your home to ensure easy access for maintenance purposes.
  • If possible, ask the associated home or homes next to the Pocket if there are future plans for the plot.

Once your plot is approved by Seth after a site visit, a volunteer planting day will follow with your community! We will provide the plants, soil amendments, and edging materials. You, as an owner of a Pocket Garden, will be responsible for watering, weeding, picking up trash and filling out maintenance reports using this form here.

If you are interested in professional sidewalk gardening services, permitting, and concrete demolition visit Eden Studios website.

To start the process, email sethianthomas@gmail.com, or fill out the “Add Plot” form here.

Why Pocket Gardens?

Importance of Native Plants for Habitat

Habitat starts with native plants. All biological life that has evolved in California has adapted to these plants specifically for food and shelter. Increasing the abundance and diversity of native species in urban areas will support a diverse caste of life that has seen declining population numbers in recent years.

Heat Urban Island Effect

Planting vegetation within the city boundaries reduces the amount of heat absorbed by urban areas. Vegetation shades the ground beneath them and transpires water through their leaves, effectively cooling the air around them.

Reducing Trash Accumulation / Beautification

Empty tree wells and barren spaces often attract litter and illegal dumping. Replanting tree wells with attractive native plants and succulents will act as a deterrent for trash accumulating in these neglected areas of the city.

Drought Tolerant Landscapes

Native species have evolved to conserve water during the hot dry months. By planting natives, we can create self-sufficient gardens that only need water the first year or two while the plants establish themselves.
